"There was a balance in the system. But now there is a force in that system that wishes to destroy the balance so that he can
become...THE ONE"
Every comic book reader has accepted the concept of multiple parallel universes for years now. Each person stands a good chance of
having a duplicate or doppelganger in these universes. The thing is that it is not likely that all feel and act the same way, so each universe
still maintains a certain uniqueness. Of course history does not neseccarily take the same course. Me I don't think that this could really
happen but the the idea of multiverses make for fun and interesting stories.
"You call it murder, but how do I murder myself 123 times?"
Alright, I enjoyed this movie just for the sheer fun of it, the really great effects and stunt work. Other than that this movie,
THE ONE has enough plot holes to stuff a universe into. Forget a the idea of this film making sense just go with the flow
and enjoy the sequential images on the screen.
"We'll get him on the other side."
In this film it seems that parallel worlds have discovered a way to travel between all the other universes. They have also created a police
force to monitor unauthorized travel between the worlds. Not a practical device here since the chances are there would be other monitoring
forces that would conflict with each other. If we think about this too much we will get a headache so let's forget trying to get logical out of
this. Time warp and multiverse stories can really do a number on the gray matter.
"Before I saw him, I felt him."
One of these policemen is Yulaw (Jet Li, but he has since gone rogue. On one mission he discovered that
when he accidently killed a duplicate in another universe, he became stronger. This leads him to killing more duplicates so that he
becomes stronger, fster and more powerful. He believes that if he kills all the duplicates he will become the one, a god. He has
killed 122 of 123 possible duplicates. This last victim on our world is a cop. This of course leads to the final battle between the two.
There can be only one!
"My grandfather taught me that energy goes in a circle."
Now here is another plot hole. Really if the writers suggest in the plot that every time a black hole forms a new universe is created. So
by their understanding they seem to believe that only 123 black holes have occurred in the universe. Yeah right! It would have made
for a better ending and plot device if we were shown by the end of the film, that this battle could continue for all eternity.
"We kill him, then it's over."
The story consisting of gravity defying fight after fight scene. Credit has to be given for spectacular stunt work and effects that are real attention
grabbers. The fight choreographer, Corey Yuen delivers the goods with fabulous wire-assisted fight scenes. Apparently this made for
a slow shoot and painstaking postproduction. CGI graphics really help in a scene where Yulaw picks a motorcycle to hit his adversary
Gabriel (Jet Li it feels like it came right out of a comic book. The other great effect is the "disintegrate to teleport scenes", guaranteed to
make you go "wow". These are some wonderful sequence out of many.
"I'm alone now. I'm here to help you Gabe."
While Yulaw is tracking and trying to kill Gabriel, two of his old compatriots have been tracking, trying to capture and return him home. This pair
of transuniverse cops are played by the usually dependable actor Delroy Lindos and the not to excitingJason Statham.
"I am Yulaw... I'm nobody's bitch."
The One is a fun 80 minute popcorn sci-fi about parallel worlds and super-human dopplegangers and hopefully out there in some other
universe the film was done the proper way. A great drive in flick for those who have one in their area or you can just wait for the video.
