DR. OTTO AND THE RIDDLE OF THE GLOOMBEAM Comedy

Jim Varney, riding on the success of his "Ernest" commercials, stars as the arch-villain Dr. Otto Von Schnick-ick- ick, a fifteen fingered insane genius out to destroy the world's economy. He is aided by tacky dressed bimbos and one homely robot. His plan is to use his Gloom Beam to fire magnetic energy beams (all in pretty colours) at major cities to destroy their economy. In this surrealistic film Varney plays many of the other characters as well. In this bizarre, campy comedy, Ernest P. Worrell grows a hand out of the top of his head and decides that he has to destroy the world. Why the hand was there was beyond me. This one weird and funny film. It doesn't make sense at times and has plotholes that you can drive massive farm tractores through it but still it has the Varney charm. Lance Sterling the questionable hero of the piece attempts to stop the diabolical scientist with the 15 finger toupee after he is called in by government officials. Will he succeed...maybe sort of...maybe if his able(??) shapely assistant Doris can help him do it. It can be considered the first Ernest movie because he made this after the commercials and before he really started the Ernest movies. You can't describe this as the first Ernest movie because it's not part of the Ernest-movie genre. DR. OTTO is a wickedly weird comic masterpiece that will have you laughing out loud, so if it plays somewhere (it's never played in Canada) see it or try to find the video if it is available in your area. Varney plays many parts in this fantasy comedy feature. As well as playing Dr. Otto, the late gifted Jim Varney, also brings to life Laughin' Jack, Guy Dandy, Rudd Hardtact and Aunt Nelda. He beat Eddie Murphy (THE KLUMPPS) at doing multiple characters in one feature. In the story Otto uses the Change Coffin to alters Dr. Otto's body so it gives Varney a chance to play the multiple characters. This is cheesy and wierd enough that we recommend that you rent the video on a slow day and have a good laugh. It is worth it just to see a big nuclear blast go off and destroy Dr. Otto's fortress and everything in a 30 mile radius. Why? Well you see Lance was next to the fortress yet he comes out unscathed. Huh? Any resemblance to anyone living or otherwise is purely coincidental. The events and characters portrayed are purely fictional. Honest.This has been a public service announcement.
