BROKEDOWN PALACE Drama High school is over and in the horizon looms college and separation for two young girls who have been friends since they learned to walk. The decide to go off on a vacation before going to college. A vacation to Hawaii quietly and unbeknownst to the parents ends up a vacation to Bangkok. Darlene the more reserved (KATE BECKINDALE) of the two agrees to go along with the wilder Alice (CLARE DANES). Once there they have great time but things begin to change when they meet a seductive and handsome Australian lad, Nick Parks (Daniel LaPaine) who eventually spends the night with the shy Darlene. Alice begins to resent her friends romance. After some time Nick proposes a quick trip to nearby Hong Kong. Things become tricky here so I won't say to much except that drugs become involved ] and things slide downhill from there. Time out for personal reflection here. I saw MIDNIGHT EXPRESS, RETURN TO PARADISE and many other movies like BROKEDOWN PALACE and I still can not figure out why people take vacations in places like these countries which have incredible bad reputations when it comes to the law. I ask myself, "Why are people so stupid to go there and get invovled with strangers and then get in trouble with the law." Stay home in your own country it is safer (?). Can you tell that I do not vacation much? These films all seem to have the same plot and the same stupid people going on the same stupid vacation that lands them in jail, where they find that jail over there really sucks. Now, don't get me wrong the movie is well done and the acting is excellent so there is no reason not to see it. That is unless you are tired of seeing vacationers getting in trouble in faraway lands. BILL PULLMAN as Yankee Hank comes to their defense and the tricks and dirty dealing hit like feces in the fan. Justice is not some you necessarily get in a foriegn country and they soon discover this. There are some excellent situation, twists and turns in the film but it comes down eventually to a sacrifice. Who's sacrifice, I am not saying... go see the movie yourself... after all they made it for you to see, not read about it.
